![]() ![]() ![]() The humour of our medieval ancestors has been the subject of scrutiny recently, with an anonymous manuscript detailing the “stand-up” comedy of a wandering minstrel recently in the news. ![]() These images still make people smile, but they seem unlikely to win the authors and artists any slots at the Edinburgh Fringe. But penises were very often the subject of medieval comedy: in one manuscript, a penis is used to point at the text (instead of a pointing finger) in another manuscript, a nun harvests fruit from a penis tree. It’s quite funny, though maybe not absolutely laugh out loud and roll around the floor funny. A riddle popular at the court of Anne of Bohemia, wife of Richard II, went like this: what is the difference between a piglet and a penis? One goes to sleep when you tickle it, the other one wakes up. ![]()
